The Leading Metal Core PCB Manufacturer
Among the metal core printed circuit boards (MCPCBs), known for their capacity to offer high thermal dissipation, Aluminum PCB is the most common type. Generally, its base material is made of an aluminum core with standard FR4 materials. It contains a thermal clad layer that dissipates heat efficiently, cooling PCB components and enhancing their overall performance. Currently, engineers mostly recommend Aluminum PCBs for high-power and tight tolerance applications.
MKTPCB has been fabricating aluminum circuits for more than ten years. Our full-featured metal core PCB manufacturing capacity and a thorough quality inspection process enable our customers to obtain high-quality products at competitive market prices. Our Aluminum PCB products are mainly used for LED lighting, power equipment, and automotive systems.
Types of Aluminum PCBs We Manufacture
While all Aluminum clads work the same way, particularly in heat dissipation, different types have individual features based on their design and structure. There are 4 main types of Aluminum boards:
1. Through-hole Aluminum PCBs
When designing a Through-hole Aluminum board, the manufacturer backfills, and pre-drills one aluminum layer before applying the laminate material. This leads to the formation of a multilayer structure core. Afterward, the manufacturer laminates the thermal materials on both PCB sides with thermal bonding materials.
2. Multilayer Aluminum PCBs
Multilayer Aluminum boards contain several layers of thermally conductive dielectrics. The design comprises one or more circuitry layers in the dielectric with blind vias acting as thermal vias.
3. High-Thermal Conductivity Aluminum PCB
Here, the insulating layer is made of an epoxy resin material. The epoxy resin displays high thermal conductivity.
4. High-Frequency Aluminum PCB
High-Frequency Aluminum boards have insulating layers made of polyolefin or polyamide materials. Sometimes, the coating contains woven fiberglass between the epoxy resins.

What is an Aluminum PCB
Aluminum PCBs resemble standard PCBs; the distinction lies in the base materials. Aluminum PCBs contain Aluminum base materials, which have high thermal dissipation capacity, durability, and dimensional stability. Standard boards cannot withstand high temperatures. Instead, they easily bend when exposed to high heat-dissipation conditions. Thus, Aluminum PCBs are valuable ingredients in such working conditions.
Aluminum circuits have unique metal-based copper-clad laminates. These laminates give them high heat conductivity, electrical insulation, and excellent machining performance. Aluminum circuits are typically classified into single-sided Aluminum PCB, double-sided Aluminum PCB, Flexible Aluminum, Mixed Aluminum PCB, and Through-hole Aluminum PCB based on the design structures and applications.
Benefits of Aluminum PCBs
Aluminum PCBs present several advantages such as:
Environmentally friendly: One major benefit of Aluminum is its recyclable and non-toxic nature. Therefore, the use of Aluminum in PCBs promotes global climate efforts through energy conservation and clean materials.
Light-weight: Aluminum boards are lightweight; hence, they fit the modern consumer demands for miniaturized products. Additionally, Aluminum metal is durable and contributes to the resilience and durability of a circuit board.
High durability: If your application calls for strength and a long lifespan, you can use Aluminum as your base material. It minimizes PCB breakage that may arise during daily use, production, and handling.
Cost-effective: Aluminum is a common metal worldwide. The easy availability makes it a more cost-effective solution compared to other base materials.
High thermal dissipation: The performance of most electronic products is adversely affected by high temperatures. Aluminum is an excellent thermal conductor that helps to dissipate heat away from vital PCB components. This ensures that the products function effectively even in adverse thermal conditions.
Aluminum Base PCB Performance
High thermal dissipation and conductivity: Compared to standard FR4 boards, Aluminum PCBs display better heat dissipation performance. For instance, an FR4 PCB with a thickness of 1.5mm has a heat resistance of 20-22 degrees per watt, while an Aluminum board with a depth of 1.5mm will display a thermal resistance of 1-2 degrees per watt.
There are no major thermal expansion and contraction issues: Every PCB base material has its thermal expansion coefficient. The CTE of Aluminum (22ppm/C) and copper (18ppm/C) are pretty close. Since Aluminum boards have high thermal dissipation properties, they do not experience significant expansion and contraction problems. They function efficiently and are durable and reliable.
Dimensional stability: Aluminum printed circuit boards display high dimensional stability. For instance, when they are heated from 30-140 degrees, their size changes by 2.5%-3.0%.
Others: You can use Aluminum boards in power device SMT. They are suitable for power devices because of their thermal expansion and circuit design performance. They prolong product shelf life and product power density. Besides, you can use them to reduce the overall product volume.
Applications of Aluminum Circuit Boards
Typically, Aluminum PCBs are used in high-thermal dissipation applications: Aluminum can conduct the heat away effectively, eliminating the need for heat sinks. This makes Aluminum a low-cost and reliable option for managing PCB heat. Aluminum boards use dielectric materials to dissipate heat away from the source quickly. Hence, the heat-emitting components do not experience high thermal stress.
LED lighting: Aluminum PCBs are commonly used in LED lights, lamps, tube lights, and car lights. LEDs emit too much heat, and they cannot function normally without metal core PCBs with high thermal dissipation capacity.
Power supply: You can use Aluminum circuits to make DC/DC and DC/AC converters. In addition, you can also use them in automotive, telecommunication, computers, power modules, and other industries.
